Projects:
Kansans Tell Their Stories
Honoring our Imigrant Past
We are taking part in the "Kansasns Tell Their Stories" project funded by the Kansas Humanities Council.
The purpose of this grant is to study the historical diversification of the different ethnic groups that homesteaded and settled the City of Collyer and the surrounding area. We want to study the unity and bonds that these settlers and thier families established despite the facts that they were from different ethinc groups, religions, and different regions of the world.
Our version is an oral history. We are currently collecting data through interviews.
Ongoing projects.
As we are reaching for grant money, we are striving to bring back the historical significance of our community and reminding ourselves of the promise it gave farm emigrants who first settled here at a Union Pacific Railroad stopping point. Out first step is to gain "Historical Designations" for 14 buildings, including the sod house on the end of Main Street, the St. Michael's Buildings, and, of course, the Zeman Dance Hall that has been famous here in Collyer for generations.
- Historical designations for the 14 identified buildings
- Gift shop, museum, restaurant, and small inn at the St Michael's Buildings
- Improvement on the Depot, including bringing back its designation as a voting/poling place for the community
- Grocery Store
- We are also working with our City Government to apply for a CDBG to improve housing conditions
